Slate.com last week featured a rather nice slide show highlighting the architectural abilities of various bird species around the world. Here we see the nest of a hummingbird. Hummingbirds tend to be rather fond of silk, which they frequently incorporate into their nests to create rather spiffy digs. Where do they get the silk? They [...]

Last week I attended a community dialogue featuring Will Allen of Growing Power, hosted by the Simon Fraser University Centre for Dialogue as part of their two-year project Planning Cities as if Food Matters. Allen spoke in a 700-seat auditorium packed to standing room only, with people sitting on the ground in the aisles and [...]

These are three day old eggplant seedlings. They were the third group of plants to sprout in the new garden that seems to be finding its way into being on the patio. A few days ahead of the eggplant were the leeks and chives, still indistinguishable from each other at this early stage in their development.

Meet Bija. “This 8 year old girl is quite a handful!” Little Bija, standing tall for her age with bushy black hair and bright curious brown eyes, is highly active and energetic. So much so that her teachers, while marveling at her innate intelligence and surprising athletic ability, lament her mischievousness nature that frequently lands her in trouble.
